As part of Story of London, June’s city-wide celebration of London’s history and cultural heritage, those interested in Soho’s unparalleled past and present as a centre of lesbian and gay creativity can join a twilight guided walking tour of the district. On June 6, from 6.00 – 8.00pm, walkers will see the haunts of Virginia Woolf, Oscar Wilde, Radcliffe Hall, Francis Bacon, Noel Coward and many others, along with other historic sites of Soho’s LGBT past, including the underground clublife of the 30s, 40s and 50s.
Organised by Kairos in Soho, the charity community organisation, this will be just the latest in its weekly walking tour programme, as its contribution to Story of London’s month-long festivities, which will include live music, theatrical performances, lectures, and over 120 other walking tours across the city. The Soho stroll aims to inform participants of the district’s astonishing history as a focal point of London’s gay and lesbian contribution to the arts, science, politics and LGBT rights, as well as telling the story of the complex and challenging lives of the characters involved.
