The much-loved London summer institution that is the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre includes in its programme this year Oscar Wilde’s masterpiece The Importance of Being Earnest (July 3 – 25), along with many other theatrical, comedic and musical delights. Set in a lush and secluded corner of the 410 acre park, this event has been held every year since 1932, and is as English as a wasp in a jug of Pimm’s.
Other theatrical productions this year include Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing and The Tempest (with the amphitheatre-style seating and towering sets adding to the classical setting), and the musical comedy Hello Dolly!, while comedy comes from Simon Amstell (of Never Mind the Buzzcocks fame), Adam Hills, The Comedy Store Players, Daniel Kitson and Jimmy Carr, and music from British Sea Power, Alabama 3 and Tunng. The combination of picnicking in one of London’s most beautiful parks and the delightfully unpredictable nature of outdoor theatre makes for a unique and thrilling experience. As the Sunday Telegraph put it: “The balmy summer setting of Regent’s Park at dusk, of course, sprinkles its own magical gold dust on an evening at the theatre.”
