Alexandra Burke, winner of the fifth series of the UK’s top-rated singing talent show The X Factor, will be appearing at G-A-Y, London’s premier gay club, on Saturday, October 17. Burke’s prize was a recording contract with Simon Cowell, and her million-selling debut single Hallelujah is the current European record holder for sales over a period of twenty-four hours. Burke’s appearance at G-A-Y ties in with the release of her debut album, Overcome, on October 19.

Ask any gay man or lesbian on the streets of London to name the first gay nightclub that comes to mind and chances are it will be G-A-Y, the largest in the capital and with one of the longest pedigrees. G-A-Y began in 1976, and over the years its huge reputation has been built on offering attitude-free clubbing in a camp and cruisy environment by specialising in pop and commercial dance music, but also on its astonishing Saturday night public appearances by artists normally only seen in arenas and stadiums.

These have included Madonna, Amy Winehouse, Donna Summer, Gloria Gaynor, Kylie Minogue, Mariah Carey, Scissor Sisters and hundreds of others, but the club is also the venue of choice for up-and-coming acts. The Independent described it as ”the one London gig that really matters for today’s pop stars”.

Ask any gay man or lesbian on the streets of London to name the first gay nightclub that comes to mind and chances are it will be G-A-Y, the largest in the capital and with one of the longest pedigrees. In September 2008 G-A-Y moved to Heaven, another legend in London’s gay clubland, a match that surely offers more to fun seekers than anywhere else in Europe.
G-A-Y began in 1976, and over the years its huge reputation has been built on offering attitude-free clubbing in a camp and cruisy environment by specialising in pop and commercial dance music, but also for its astonishing Saturday night public appearances by artists normally only seen in arenas and stadiums. These have included Madonna, Amy Winehouse, Donna Summer, Gloria Gaynor, Kylie Minogue, Mariah Carey, Scissor Sisters and hundreds of others, but the club is also the venue of choice for up-and-coming acts. The Independent described it as ”the one London gig that really matters for today’s pop stars.”
Heaven’s London and international fame since its opening in 1979 was built on its cutting edge promotion of disco and house music, as well as legendary performances by acts including Cher, Divine, Sylvester and Grace Jones. In the merger of the two clubs the character of each has been preserved, with the main floor playing G-A-Y’s brand of pop and commercial dance and the others Heaven’s trademark house, RnB and Bashment. All this in a club with a capacity of over 1600 and a licence to sell alcohol until 6.00 am! G-A-Y Heaven indeed.
